BY DAY you'd never know they were there, but Alix-Marie, Stacey and Josh share a secret which only becomes clear after dark.
They have tattoos etched with a glow in the dark ink, which appear under ultra-violet light used in nightclubs.
``The process is no different from having a normal tattoo,'' said Alix-Marie, 22, from Cockatoo Valley, who has a design to represent her star sign - Virgo - on her wrist.
``When you go out it really glows. It's a pretty cool idea.''
Alix-Marie, who has other tattoos including one on her foot, said they were an extension of her identity.
Her friend Stacey Palmer, 22, from Ridgehaven had a swirling design drawn on a finger two weeks ago.
``I had it done because I like art. It's swirls and stuff,'' she said.
``Everyone thinks it's pretty cool. It's something different.''
Tattoo artist Pablo, 26, from Modbury, said they were drawn using using FireFly Tattoo Ink.
``It's something different and it's new. It could be used in an existing tattoo, for example to accent the eyes in a face.''
He said they were a safe clubbing accessory which virtually disappears to the naked eye in normal light.
``The girls get designs which you won't necessarily see during the day, but they can be seen when you're clubbing. It's a bit more discreet I suppose.''
Of course the hard part of drawing an invisible tattoo is being able to see it.
To overcome this Pablo, who works in a studio in Tea Tree Gully - it's called Ink Wizards - works under a mixture of daylight and UV backlight.
Josh, 25, from Para Hills, has the words ``I am what I am'' printed in bold on his forearm, which shines brightly in yellow under the UV glare.
``I was just trying to figure out an expression that said what I was.. for being unique,'' he said.
